JSPAN Social Justice Award Honoree Event - November 21, 2011 - Guest Speaker Ruth W. Messinger
On Monday, November 21, JSPAN honored the firm of Langer, Grogan & Diver, P.C. with the 2011 Social Justice Award, in recognition of their contribution to law in the public interest. The guest speaker for the evening's program was Ruth W. Messinger, President of American Jewish World Service.
In her speech, entitled "Fighting Hunger in a World of Plenty: Repairing Our Global Food System," Messinger addressed a capacity crowd and brought attention to the ways in which the progressive Jewish community and progressive groups in general can raise awareness and, at the same time, bring pressure on the United States government to fashion real and lasting solutions to the global food crisis.
The event took place at the Independence Visitor Center, 6th and Market Streets, in Philadelphia. Messinger, who has been a leading figure in the Jewish community for decades, is recognized as a national leader in the movement to end genocide in Sudan and, in recognition of her leadership, has served on the Obama administration's Task Force on Global Poverty and Development.
