Rally to End Handgun Violence
On Tuesday, September 26th, the PATH Coalition (of which JSPAN is a member) and other concerned organizations will hold a Rally to Stop Gun Violence in Harrisburg. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives will be holding a day long discussion of how to reduce gun violence and we need a show of force in Harrisburg on that day to communicate to legislators that we want meaningful action to reduce gun violence.

We will be asking legislators to take action in service of three goals:

  • Stop the flow of illegal handguns;
  • enact smarter laws and support more effective law enforcement to curb gun crime;
  • invest in a peaceful future by expanding opportunities for education and employment.
Events in Harrisburg will include a prayer vigil at noon, visits with legislative staffs, and a rally at 2 p.m. in the Capital Rotunda.

Buses will load in various places around the state and converge on the State Capitol in Harrisburg, PA on Tuesday, September 26th.

To reserve your seat(s) on buses call (215) 923-1940 or www.september26rally.org

Please also remember to sign the petition to give the City of Philadelphia the power to make its own gun laws .

Public Expression of Religion Act heads to House Floor
Last week the House Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would make it more difficult for attorneys to collect modest legal fees when challenging laws violating the separation between church and state. H.R. 2679, known as the Public Expression of Religion Act, would prevent plaintiffs, who win lawsuits regarding the Establishment Clause, from collecting out-of-pocket expenses.

Groups like the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, Americans United and the American Civil Liberties Union have blasted the bill as a way to discourage citizens from challenging First Amendment abuses.

JSPAN encourages its members to contact their legislators and voice their opposition to the Public Expression of Religion Act.
